The Effects of Sitting for Hours

Most truckers know that sitting for long periods of time is not good for you. But what is really happening to your body? We've done some digging and found some incredible information.

MUSCULOSKELETAL INJURIES

Musculoskeletal injuries (injuries to the muscles, tendons, ligaments, soft tissues and bones) occur nearly four times more often among long-haul truck drivers than among other workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Which injuries are the most common?

How do they occur?

To answer these questions, a study was funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health was published in the journal Workplace Health & Safety.

The most common types of injuries truckers suffered from were sprains and strains, accounting for 60% of injuries reported in the survey. Looking at the cause, most of the injuries reported were from falls, stumbles and slips followed by the contact or running into an object or equipment.

DOES TRUCKING MAKE YOU CLUMSY?

When you review the report it sounds like some truckers could suddenly become clumsy or blundering after being on the job for only a few months. While other factors like fatigue might play a roll, in some cases, there are other issues at work here.

All of this falls under what's called ergonomics. It's the study of how people fit into their working environment. For truckers, their main working environment is inside the cab if their truck, mainly the driver's seat.

The following video was created by Work Safe BC and gives you an idea of how parts of the body can breakdown if unsupported for long periods of time.

The issues of clumsiness and blundering is generally caused by muscle atrophy when muscles waste away by a lack of physical activity. Your muscles can become weaker over time and eventually it can be more difficult to get in and out of the truck, lift heavier objects and some could begin to experience joint discomfort.

However, the problems can go deeper than that... without a proper diet or nutritional intake to help replenish what your body has lost due to inactivity, the complications can get worse.

PROBLEM: WEIGHT GAIN

Moving causes your muscles to release molecules like lipoprotein lipase, which helps process the fats and sugars you eat. When you spend most of your day sitting, the release of these molecules is lessened and your rear end is at greater risk of widening, according to research. You’re also at greater risk for metabolic syndrome, even if you exercise. One study by Trusted Source found, unsurprisingly, men who spent more time sitting than usual, gained more weight around the middle, which is the most dangerous place to store fat. Known as Visceral Fat, it can surround your internal organs and narrow your blood supply to those vital organs causing your blood pressure to go up.

PROBLEM: HEART DISEASE

Sitting can hurt your heart, potentially leading to cardiovascular disease. One study found that men who spent more than 23 hours per week watching television had a 64 percent greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease than men who only watched television for 11 hours. Now, watching television is not trucking, but the act of sitting is BOTH. Experts say people who sit more have a 147% higher risk of suffering from a heart attack or stroke. These chances increase with a poor diet and lack of proper nutritional intake.

PROBLEM: DIABETES

Diabetes is often mentioned in this blog and generally we associate it with a poor diet and nutritional intake. However, people who spend more time sitting also have a 112% increased risk of diabetes. In one study by Trusted Source they looked into the effects of just five days of bed rest. What the researches found was increased insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes.

PROBLEM: VARICOSE VEINS

Sitting for long periods of time can cause blood to pool in the legs. This can lead to varicose veins, or spider veins, a smaller version of the former. Though generally not harmful themselves, these swollen and visible veins can be unsightly. In rare cases, they can lead to more serious conditions, like blood clots.

• While walking does increase blood flow, which is an improvement over sitting, eating a healthy diet is also essential to improving blood circulation to help prevent or slow the development of varicose veins. Self-care through diet and exercise is not only beneficial to varicose veins but also to your overall health. PROBLEM: DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS

Deep Vein Thrombosis is a type of blood clot that’s most common in the legs. When part of this clot breaks off, it can cut off the flow of blood to other parts of the body such as your lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. This is a medical emergency that can lead to major complications or even death. Sitting for too long, even on a long road trip, can cause DVT.

• Some evidence suggests that a health-promoting diet, regular exercise, and maintenance of a healthy weight may reduce the risk of DVT. Persons who are on medication to prevent DVT recurrence should follow similar diet and exercise measures and maintain consistent intake of vitamin K-containing foods (which will list in a future blog).
